The Polarities Project was conceived at the beginning of the pandemic in response to the cumulative disparities erupting around us. It was an implicit, intuitive response, rather than an obvious one. I was feeling my way around a poetic sensibility that would indirectly wrestle with the various themes in a way that could rouse the imagination without assault (the assault of the bleaker parts of our present existence on this earth). I conceived this ongoing project with a 4-fold thematic structure (see my Accordian book, Emblem): Stolen Cypress [land degradation], A Bored Tycoon [wealth disparities], The Half-life of Spring [extremes in climate due to climate change], and The Land of If and When [the intimate human struggle in the face of extremes. This theme, in part, was weighted by the political climate and the reactive outrage on both sides fueling polarization and freezing the imagination.]. All of these themes are interrelated and so I see them as part of the same project.
