The title of this piece, Survivals, is a term coined by a pioneer of the field of anthropology, Edward B. Taylor, and referred to by Blumenberg in his discussion on why archetypes persevere. Survivals are "processes, customs, opinions...which have been carried on by force of habit...into a new society different from that in which they had their original home." (Taylor, Primitive Cultures, 1871)
